SPEAKER_01I'm excited. I have so many dreams for this place. My main goal, of course, is to grow enough food for all eight of us. We need a look at the night sky.

SPEAKER_02So um we're back with Devin Locke, President Country Boy.
SPEAKER_01Yo.
SPEAKER_02Um, so you're planning to move out to Eighth Hall to start a homestead with your parents, my parents, your wife, my sister, and my other sister and her husband.
SPEAKER_01Husband. He is to her.
SPEAKER_02Her brother.
SPEAKER_01What?
SPEAKER_02Four couples. Four couples, 40 acres, one dream.
SPEAKER_00I can't wait for this movie to come out September 23rd.
SPEAKER_02Um, first of all, tell us about just tell us about it. Give us some context. And then we'd like to hear one thing you're excited about and one thing you're anxious about.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I'll start with context.

SPEAKER_01We had the bright idea. We were living in Bend. You and Mia. Mia and I, my wife.
SPEAKER_02My sister.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. I think, yeah. We've got the whole family tree. I'll put that in the pod in the podcast notes.
SPEAKER_02The addendum.
SPEAKER_01Um and for a job, I we moved to Reno, Nevada. Um, Brian and Gail, my uh brother and sister-in-law, came down to visit us about a month later. And we had always talked a little bit, it had been my dream to buy property and kind of grow food and and live on it. Um and so we were just kind of talking about it, dreaming about it. They're like, well, we'd be interested in that. Um and then I can't exact exactly remember how it went, but the word got out to my parents, like I mentioned it to my parents, and they're like, oh, we're interested. And then your parents as well were interested. It was like, wow, this is perfect. And so we started just looking at land kind of more in the dreamy phase of like, could we do this? Is it possible? Um, and we looked all over. We um we looked in Washington and Oregon and um and Idaho, but we kind of settled on somewhere in Idaho just because of um I don't want to say political reasons, but like restriction reasons.
SPEAKER_03So like less permitting requirements and all that kind of stuff. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's just a little bit easier to kind of do what you want without someone trying to either take money for you or oversee your uh what you're doing. Um so Idaho it was, and so we kind of narrowed it down. Um Brian and Gail were living in Boise at the time, so we were looking kind of southern Idaho. And then as we moved, we're kind of just looking up north, um, and we found like the perfect property, like the pictures that they took. It was like, and of course they were kind of zhuzhing it up a bit, like it was right in spring when everything's blooming. Oh, yeah, and it just looks like paradise on Earth. Like um, these beautiful wildflower meadows. Um it looked like it had just been sitting there for however many years, which it had. Um someone that was a a logger had owned it. I don't know that he ever logged it. Um maybe he did, but anyways, it had just been sitting there for years and years and years, and we went up and visited it and and a few other properties, but this one just made the most sense, and it like as soon as we stepped on it, we're like, this is it. Wow. So you know what?
SPEAKER_02I don't even think I knew all that context.
SPEAKER_01Oh.
SPEAKER_02Like why you guys chose Idaho even.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Or how it even started.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Idaho's a cool place, especially northern Idaho. Um just unreal gorgeous.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, with so it kind of is like a good mix of I grew up in Eugene, Oregon, where obviously it's rainy, Willamette Valley, very green, very beautiful, but there's a lot of moisture. Um and so northern Idaho has a moderate level of moisture and quite a bit of green, but also the summers are very dry. Um, so that area is well known for growing wheat. Uh huh. Um, it's like the Palouse, like that area of Washington and and Idaho. So a lot of farmland that's not irrigated. It's like the soil just holds water very well. Um very cool place. Uh as far as my excitement and my fears.
SPEAKER_02Let's start with fear.
SPEAKER_01Fear. There's a lot more excitement than there's fear, I'll say. Luckily enough. Just wanted to throw something edgy at you. Yeah. I think one fear, and this is kind of the obvious one, is like not being able to financially upkeep 40 acres in the way that we want to. Like we want to steward the land. Most of it is is forest. Okay. And so, but it's kind of been forest that has been just let loose. So there's a lot of down trees. There's a lot of shrub underbrush that's very flammable. Oh, I see.
SPEAKER_02I was thinking like rich soil, but maybe there is rich soil as well, yeah.
SPEAKER_01From decomposing trees and and all that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_01Trying to figure out ways to both economically and like better the the land. Economically, I guess. Um managing it not super intensely because we don't have I mean, I guess we have time, but um I would like to spend my time more on the growing food aspect of it than the land stewardship of it, but trying to do that in a way that we're not spending hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars um to get that done. And that's like my biggest fear is and then also we're trying to build houses and places to live and greenhouses.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you're gonna have four couples, you're gonna have four four houses, or I guess three maybe.
SPEAKER_01I think yeah.
SPEAKER_02For my so Brian and Gail, so that's my sister and her husband, are building a house, and then mom and my parents have like a mother-in-law suite.
SPEAKER_01I don't know their final plans.
SPEAKER_02I don't think they're having a whole house themselves, but okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's uh it's kind of my understanding is they're like connected with a a central kind of common area for guests and then two separate little kind of smaller homes.
SPEAKER_02And you have a fruit or uh fruit fruit trees, you started them last year.
SPEAKER_01Yes, we started them last year. Oh, what kind of fruit trees? We have we bought ten. Okay. Several have died. Yeah, they're they're tricky. They're really tricky. Um and they had a tough start to life. So um we there's some apple trees. I think there's a couple apple trees.
SPEAKER_02There's one tree that grows apricot, nectarine, and something else. One thing. We called it like the fruit salad.
SPEAKER_01And it's based, you know, it's a stone fruit. Um grafted four different types grafted onto one. Oh, interesting so it it grows all sorts of things. Some pears, some cherries. Nice nectarine.
SPEAKER_02Are you gonna build a guest house? Do you think? I mean maybe. Like you're gonna have lots of company.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And also this property is thirty minutes away from the nearest town, which is a small town. St. Mary's, yeah, which is teeny. And in the bigger, like a city, you're an hour away.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So it's a relatively remote. Yeah. Yeah. There's quite a few people that live up in the area that we're at. Um and it's people that kind of want to be away. Yeah. Totally. And and so there is a good community locally. There's a lot of people farming already. Oh, nice. There's a family just down the road that does a whole raw ice cream? Yeah, they do the whole nine yards. So they've been a cool resource. Um Okay.
SPEAKER_02What about being stuck with your family?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Permanently.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, I know. I I understand that that that can be a an issue. I what's nice about the land is it's 40 acres, right? Yeah. Like we don't ha have to be next to people if we don't.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, sure, sure, sure.
SPEAKER_01And so I think it'll take a lot of maybe not a lot, but you know, building boundaries of being like, hey guys, we don't come into the house without knocking. Right, right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And it it might take a little bit of work to like get get through that. I'm not necessarily concerned about that all that much.
SPEAKER_02You guys all get along very well.
SPEAKER_01And I'm more excited to like as we possibly start to have kids, having our kids have both sets of grandparents like right there, right there, and available. And aunt and uncle right there, like so much space. It just seems like a a pretty cool place to to raise kids. Um being able to teach them where food comes from. I think we're so disconnected from that um as a society. And it just yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay, what are you excited about?
SPEAKER_01Where do I start? I'm ex I have so many dreams for this place. Um my main goal, of course, is to grow enough food for all eight of us to live that maybe 80% of our food is coming off of the land, um, which includes the whole a whole vegetable garden, of course, our fruit trees and then uh meat in whatever uh way works uh for us. There's a lot of um a lot of ways you can do it. Rabbits are kind of the most sustainable form of meat. Um of course chickens is what everyone is used to and and likes, but it's a little bit less like you have to buy eggs every year or or chicks every year. And it's a little bit more of a you're expending a little bit more.
SPEAKER_02So as where why can't you why do you have to buy eggs every year? Or chicks I mean.
SPEAKER_01Um most chickens that uh these days are a product of like twelve generations of breeding to get to one uh breed. So like take the Cornish Cross, for example, which is like the the commercially used chicken uh for for meat. It is like multiple different breeding, like twelve generations of breeding to get to one um Cornish cross hen.
SPEAKER_02Okay. It's like a hybrid, hybrid, hybrid.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's they're they're very hybrided and they they've done it in such a way where you can't just they won't breed true.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow.
SPEAKER_01And so you don't really I mean you probably could just get away with breeding them and whatever, but you don't know what you're gonna get. So it could be a chicken that doesn't grow very big.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow.
SPEAKER_01So it's just not and also chickens aren't historically very good mothers, especially the hybridized ones, because they're they never do it, right? Oh my god. So True You don't know if they're gonna raise them or they're just gonna die. Yeah. So whereas rabbits are they eat their young. Sure. They do. Yeah. But they also are generally good parents, good mothers. Other than that, you know, eating. Sometimes they get a little hungry. Yeah. Um, but they, you know, they'll have I think you can get up to like eight litters out of one female rabbit. Oh wow. And that's like twelve rabbits per litter. And then for the first six weeks they're just drinking mama milk, and then the next six weeks you feed them like clover and maybe some weeds out of your garden, and then they're up to size. So they're very you don't there's not a lot of input. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whereas chickens, you're feeding them expensive feed well you know, every day as well.
SPEAKER_02Unless you're letting them just roam around they still need food. Oh.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Show thing. I also was told that I got quite an education recently from a I think it was like an 11-year-old who is really into rabbits. Nice. And she told me that you don't want to eat a rabbit past four months old.
SPEAKER_01Gets tough.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Interesting. Didn't know that.
SPEAKER_01So the there there's a lot of ideas there, buying pigs to kind of clear the land. Yeah, they're really trees. Yeah. Um, the same thing with chickens. I think you know, we'll have egg-laying chickens, of course. Um but a lot of the ideas are in mobile coupes for and mobile pasture for any animal that we have. They're not just going to be set in one location where they tear it all up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so we have a relatively big meadow, grass meadow. It's huge. Um that a lot of these animals will be rotated through as well as that forest land. Pigs are like a forest land creature by trade. By nature, yeah, by trade. Um and so they do a really good job of uprooting things and clearing out brush. So that's one of the ideas for kind of low hands-on brush clearing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like lower lowering your fire risk. Right, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So, I think pigs running through their um, yeah. I really my my ultimate dream, and this may be more of a dream than a reality, just because in my mind I think it's cool, but it could be a lot more work, you know, you know, those type of dreams. Yeah. But there's a I got the idea from a farm here in central Oregon called Rain Shadow Organics. They've been doing it for many years. And they do farm-to-table dinners. Oh, I yeah.
SPEAKER_03Have you been to one? I've not been to one, but I've seen pictures of them and read about them. So it's really cool.
SPEAKER_01I would recommend it going if you can on a special occasion. We actually went to one on Valentine's Day. It was quite a few years ago. But incredible. Um, but basically they own that they're cooking things from their farm. Yeah. Yeah. And so I think that would be cool. And we could set up just a beautiful, like, huge, long family style table.
SPEAKER_02I can see it. That property is so pretty.
SPEAKER_01Have a commercial kitchen and wow.
SPEAKER_02Cool.
SPEAKER_01The the the challenge to it is you have to make it cool enough to drive an hour away from the town. Totally.
SPEAKER_02Like, yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, and it's also a lot of effort. I'm not a chef by any means.
SPEAKER_02You are too. What you say?
SPEAKER_01I would say I'm a cook as opposed to a chef.
SPEAKER_02Oh my gosh, you're an incredible cook. You'd crush it. You and Brian and Gail are incredible cooks.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Right, but it's like this is actually like running a hospitality business that is also attached to a farm. Yeah. Right? Like, in there is like schooling.
SPEAKER_01Uh and like people this is a career for most you know, for people. Sure. Um I can just imagine it being stressful. Sure. Sure. Say if the tortellini gets burnt.
SPEAKER_02Yikes. Wouldn't know what to do with that, honestly.
SPEAKER_01So because you have to make it cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Vibes.
SPEAKER_01Anyways. That could be r I think it'd be neat. It would be a cool, cool setup. We're another exciting thing is we're planning on building a natural swimming pool. Yeah, that's what I'm excited about. A big natural swimming pool there. Nice.
SPEAKER_02So you're gonna have a pond for irrigation, right? And for the animals, right? And then you're gonna also have your swimming pond.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Right? Yeah. They'll be separate. Yeah. But I you know, it it kind of depends on our water source, whether or not we need even need a pond. Oh, okay. It could just be out of the well as far as irrigation.
SPEAKER_02Also, you guys have to dig a well still. And that's a big process.
SPEAKER_01That is.
SPEAKER_02And do you have a water witch?
SPEAKER_01Do you want to be our water witch?
SPEAKER_02Sure. Do you know what a water witch is?
SPEAKER_03Water witch is who's like doing the downing rods and finding the spot where you should dig the well?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I have a hard, hard time.
SPEAKER_01I understand that it like works. Well, but what is like the na like say if they weren't there and you drilled in the same spot, like that they would have chosen? What are the odds that you're gonna hit water?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I I uh does it work?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I don't know. It's very hard for me to believe, but also that people have success with it, right? That's true. But I guess if you dig deep enough, there's water anywhere, probably. I don't know. It's it's difficult for me to buy into, I guess.
SPEAKER_03But I've never met one. I would like to talk to someone who does it, you know, and be like, what's the like what's the feeling? You know, like how do you know? Like, what are you what's your experience? What was your training? The willow branches tell you. That's what I'm saying. I want to I want to know more about that.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's the other thing, too, is there's no set, like no certification process. Yeah, yeah. It's like a homie walks up and like snaps two twigs. And when they cross is when the water is.
SPEAKER_02Science.
SPEAKER_01Or they use some people use copper. That's what it yeah. You know, there's like so many different it's not a standardized process, which I I don't think helps its credibility.
SPEAKER_02And digging well is really expensive, and so you want to make sure that you have it on good authority that there is water in that spot.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Which at what point do you defer to the guy that digs at wells every day on on the spot? I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Anyways, there's a there's a well across the holler. I don't know what a holler is, it just sounds nice. It seems right. Um that has like 200 gallons a minute. Oh, okay. It's like an incredible well. Uh-huh. 200 feet down. So what do you mean a holler?
SPEAKER_02You mean one of your neighbors?
SPEAKER_01Like it's kind of like a this is what I imagine a holler to be, is like a we're up kind of higher, and then there's a dip down, and then they're back up. So I would I would call that dip down.
SPEAKER_02You wouldn't call it a valley.
SPEAKER_01I think it's too small to be a valley.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01Valleys are big.
SPEAKER_02Whatever.
SPEAKER_01Between mountains. Makes sense.
SPEAKER_02Okay, what else are you excited about? No-till gardening?
SPEAKER_01Yes, I'm very excited about no-till gardening.
SPEAKER_02Now, what's that?
SPEAKER_01Uh, you don't till yeah. Reinventing the wheel here. Well, no-till, and I I don't want to pretend like I have the most knowledge on this. I haven't done it in practice. This is all in my head.
SPEAKER_02And YouTube.
SPEAKER_01So the first thing you do with no-till is you till the ground. Really? Yeah. So you you no-till is more of a funny. I mean, you you can do it without, but um, that is one way to start. Is you have like, say, like your your meadow out front. Like, how do you get that to be growing right?
SPEAKER_03You gotta get the grasses out of there somewhere.
SPEAKER_01And so I think we have a lot of rock in the our garden area up there. And so we're gonna have to pull all that rock out. Also, the ground is incredibly uneven.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I would like it to be a little bit more flat. And so I'm gonna use my Bullins 1455, large frame garden tractor, to till up that ground, and that will help, first of all, to loosen it. It's it's pretty compacted and and has a relatively high clay content in the soil. And so we need to add uh biological material to it to help it drain because it right now it holds a lot of water, which is good and bad because it also holds a lot of nutrients. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, but you also need it to drain. So I'm gonna till it. Well, first of all, pull the rocks out. I would like to mow it once to get all the because there's a lot of s have you ever heard of snow berry? Yeah. It's just like a a little bush that creates like one berry per they they don't produce a lot of berries um and just kind of a woody shrub. And so I want to mow all of that down along with the grass and then plant a cover crop in it of clovers, rye.
SPEAKER_02Yay, that's exciting.
SPEAKER_01You can do like some radish, some vetch that add, you know, a lot of green, they call it green manure. Or green mass. Yeah, yeah. So you basically will grow that and either crimp it down, which is just like running a knocking it over, knocking it over to kill it, and then um till that all in. So that would be the first kind of step. So you till that in. Um I would like to shape my beds because I'm gonna do kind of a raised bed system. Okay. With you know 30 inch wide beds um that are a hundred feet long.
SPEAKER_02Thirty-inch wide beds? Yeah, so like like long beds.
SPEAKER_01No, they're wide. This wide for a hundred feet long.
SPEAKER_02Oh okay.
SPEAKER_01Um with walkways in between. Oh, okay. And in the walkways, I'm gonna grow clover. Oh nice as like a nice because it fixes clover fixes nitrogen into the ground from the air. From the atmosphere. Um, which is one of the you know, NPK or your three kind of macro nutrients that that things need to grow. Nitrogen, phosphorus, NPK, potassium. I think that's right. Yeah. So clover in the walkways. Also, I will grow more cover crops in the rows, and then you use a tarp to kill them. You crimp and then tarp. Okay.
SPEAKER_02And that crimp and tarp.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Uh basically it it creates this very moist, warm environment that the weed seeds will germinate and then die because there's no sunlight. Oh, it basically creates a stale, they call it a stale weed bed where now you don't have any weed seeds, and also it helps to decompose that cover crop that you've terminated. And so with a mixture of that, adding compost every year, you start to build soil health. Okay. You really want the soil to be microbe dominant as opposed to bacteria dominant. So interesting. A lot of the times it's bacteria dominant when it's just left alone. But as you start to build these um adding more organic material that's decomposing, it brings in microbes. Okay. Cool. Um that help the soil, it creates like a microbial network that helps with nutrient transfer. If you don't have the microbes, you can have as much nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus in the soil, but the plants can't get to it.
SPEAKER_02So how do you how do you get microbes in there?
SPEAKER_01Basically, you just continue to add things that decompose. Oh. Whether that be compost, um, which is kind of fertilizer. Fertilizers can help.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, that's more if you're you're deficient in those nutrients. Oh. So probably do annual or semi-annual soil tests to just see where we're at. Interesting, yeah. And then you can add things like blood meal, alfalfa meal, bone meal. Exactly what it sounds like. It's like dried up blood.
SPEAKER_02Yay! Trying to be supportive here. But I'm I I said yay because I realized, oh, the whole animal will be used. Yeah. And praise be.
SPEAKER_01Praise be. So there's a lot of ideas running around this head of how to improve the soil. The soil is already really rich and good. There's just a few things that need to be added to make it like outstanding. Um there's another thing you can add called biochar, which is basically my understanding of it, which is at an elementary level at this point, is that you burn wood in an environment that lacks oxygen.
SPEAKER_03Oh, so you're making charcoal.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Okay. And that gets added to the soil, and it that that's like carbon. Yeah. Right. At its basic state. And it has a lot of little like holes and pockets in the carbon that microbes love to live in. And it also adds kind of drainage, it also decays. Yeah. And so you're getting this kind of influx of microbes into your soil to help break down the organic matter. Wow. Which again adds to soil health and um being able to grow a lot of things.
SPEAKER_02Wow. Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_01Amazing.
SPEAKER_02Very exciting, very impressive.
SPEAKER_01Indeed. Lots going on. I am very excited.
SPEAKER_02By the way, Wolf gave you a book.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah. So this is a book that I uh had read about and then found at a usebook store in my brief uh off-grid homestead adjacent era, um pre-COVID and then into COVID uh in Flagstaff. Nice. And um, I found it very useful. It's uh called The Encyclopedia of Country Living.
SPEAKER_01Practical advice and valuable information and collective wisdom for folks and farmers in the country city and anywhere in between.
SPEAKER_02Wow, that is a very long subtitle.
SPEAKER_03It is. It's kind of this woman started writing this book as like a binder that she would just like give out to like her friends in North Idaho, and then has like updated it over the years, and now it's like a whole book. And so it's like So it's from Idaho. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's like instruction, you know, it's like everything you could need, right? It's like where do you want to put your house? How do you build your well? What kind of animals make sense to grow? Like, how do you do that? Like all the different kinds of vegetable gardening and stuff, and then like storage and and preserve preservation, and then there's recipes in there for like jam and all this kind of stuff. Um, so I don't know, especially if you're trying to like analog yourself a little bit, you know. Some of it's really good. Some of it's not so good.
SPEAKER_01An introductory grain quiz. Ooh, if someone wants um to have one of the questions asked.
SPEAKER_02Yes. I think can you ask a question?
SPEAKER_01If you needed to raise tons of quality grain within two months, which grain can you plant?
SPEAKER_02Rabbits.
SPEAKER_01If you want to grow a heavy-producing top bread-making grain, which one should you plant? Wow.
SPEAKER_02Alfalfa.
SPEAKER_01No, wrong.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01If your land is just a swamp next to a river, which grain can you grow?
SPEAKER_02Ch chaff.
SPEAKER_01Sorgh. This is great. We're just thinking of grains we know.
SPEAKER_02Cranberry bog.
SPEAKER_01This is something I haven't got into, is the grains.
SPEAKER_02That's what I was gonna ask you. Are you thinking of growing grains?
SPEAKER_01I think it'd be fun. You know, a lot of people think of growing grains as like a big commercial operation.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01Which, to be fair, it is. Um in a lot of ways, because it's a lot of effort to go and like scythe down.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like your your the amount you get per stock is just like not very much, you know. Very minimal.
SPEAKER_01But I think, you know, and at a small scale, if I'm trying to grow wheat for eight people, yeah. You could probably do a you know, hundred by hundred foot square of wheat and get a decent crop. Yeah, decent crop out of there.
SPEAKER_02Sick.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, this is yeah, the syrup maker's responsibilities.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
